Envisioning a sweet and romantic session to celebrate their marriage, Paris and Terrence met me at sunrise at the DC Kennedy Center last summer. Have you been to the Reach at the Kennedy Center yet? It’s one of my favorite locations to photograph in the city. So much so, that I’ll almost always suggest it as an option for my couples as we’re planning their upcoming session. While there are plenty of places to go for a DC engagement session, The Reach combines nature and architecture so perfectly. As an architecture nerd myself, I’m always drawn to buildings that are pleasing to the eye and photograph well with my subjects around them. Paris and Terrence got married at the end of 2020 and wanted photographs together to celebrate.
When I asked Paris what she admires most about her husband, she said how passionate he is about everyone and everything in his life. I definitely caught a glimpse of that passion during our time together. Terrence kept the session light-hearted and vibrant with his laughter, high energy, and tenderness towards Paris. And what did he say he most admired about his wife? Her thoughtfulness. Paris gives off a sweet and caring demeanor. Within our first few minutes together, I knew that she has a big heart and loves others well.
I so enjoyed my time with these two! I photographed their session entirely on film–not a digital camera in sight! With Paris being a photographer herself, I wanted to push myself creatively for this session. Shooting on film helped me to do just that. I was able to experiment with shadows, interesting focal points, and even double exposures using a Holga 120 camera. This year, I have a few more opportunities to shoot at the DC Kennedy Center, but this session will always be special to me!
