This year has been extremely busy and stressful for my business and my personal life, and it all caught up to me in early October when I was drowning in work and just mentally, physically, creatively, and spiritually exhausted. I knew I needed time away to rest and reset. After seeing ads for this company called Getaway popping up, I looked into it further. It sounded like EXACTLY what I needed, so I booked a trip for the week of Thanksgiving! It was an incredible trip and I’m excited to share my Getaway House review of my time as well as photos all shot on 35mm film.
I was so excited the week leading up—just really ready for some alone time far away from work and people and all the stress of the past few months. You can read about my 2019 year in review here. On Sunday after church, I headed out! The campground was about 2 hours north of Atlanta in the Chattahoochee National Forest and it was a really beautiful and relaxing drive up through the remaining fall colors on the trees in the mountains.
When I got to my cabin, I squealed with excitement when I saw how cute the inside of it was! I loved the humungous window facing out to the forest plus the mini kitchen and sitting area. There was a campfire station, chairs, and a picnic table outside of my cabin too.
Sunday afternoon— Every cabin is named after a Getaway staff member’s grandparent; mine was Casimir. After settling in, unpacking, and resting just a little bit, I went out to explore since there was still sunlight. It was sooo quiet on the campground, which I loved. Mostly just sounds of nature. I saw a few other campers my first night, but for the most part, it was empty and serene.
On Monday morning, I woke up and made banana raisin pancakes for breakfast with a cup of tea. One of the main priorities of my trip was to read, pray, and reflect. I brought with me a whole stack of journals that I’ve been writing in since 2012 (probably about 10 journals) and took time to look through them, just reminiscing on life and what I’ve journaled with God about over the years. Afterward, I went on a quick and easy hike on the campground. The weather was perfect for walking around and embracing nature. After hiking, I went back to the cabin to play cards using the book of card games in the mini library provided in my cabin. I got pretty hooked on a game called “Calculation.”
Monday evening— My second attempt at a campfire. I wanted to start and build a fire on my own using a magnesium stick and a knife, but that proved to be way harder than expected, so I relied on the fire starting kit instead. I ate my dinner and played more cards outside as the sun was setting then enjoyed some s’mores and read a book by the fire until it was too cold to be out any more.
Tuesday morning— My last day 🙁 I woke up early to catch what I could of the sunrise. It was freezing that early in the day! There was frost covering everything! I stayed out taking pictures for a bit then went back to my cabin to make more pancakes and read a bit before cleaning up to check out.
Getaway House Review & Recap
I wish I had another day or two because this trip was amazing! I can’t recommend Getaway House enough. Here’s my recap review:
– It’s truly the perfect retreat from work, life, people, etc. No cell service, no wifi, no distractions.
– As a solo camper, safety was my main priority and I felt very safe the entire time. Don’t be afraid to go by yourself if you can’t find anyone to go with you. With that said, if you do go with people, you’ll be in close quarters with whoever you camp with so just be prepared for that!
– You don’t have to be outdoorsy to enjoy it. There’s heat/AC, running water, a fridge, a hot shower, electricity, a flushing toilet, etc. It’s basically glamping (glamorous camping).
– Bring your own food to cook! The cabin comes with everything you need to make food.
– Embrace the solitude and enjoy the rest!
